Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. For example: 45 is what percent of 300? — divide 45 by 300 to get 0.15, then multiply by 100 to get 15%. Use the "X is what % of Y?" panel above to get the answer instantly, along with the formula shown.
Percentage change = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease. For example: going from 80 to 100 = ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = +25% increase. Our calculator labels it automatically.
Percentage change is directional — it measures how much a value changed relative to a starting point (before → after). Percentage difference is non-directional — it measures the relative gap between two values using their average as the base. Use change when there is a clear "before" and "after". Use difference when comparing two values of equal standing, like two prices or two test scores.
To add a percentage: multiply the number by (1 + percent ÷ 100). Example: 500 + 10% = 500 × 1.10 = 550. To subtract: multiply by (1 − percent ÷ 100). Example: 500 − 10% = 500 × 0.90 = 450. This is useful for calculating sale prices, markups, tax-inclusive totals, and tip amounts.
For a fraction or ratio: divide the top number (numerator) by the bottom number (denominator), then multiply by 100. Example: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%. For a decimal: simply multiply by 100. Example: 0.85 × 100 = 85%. Both conversions are available as separate panels on this page.
