How to Use the Lorem Ipsum Generator

Choose Your Output Unit

Select Paragraphs for full blocks of text, Words for an exact word count, Sentences for individual lines, or Bytes to generate text to a specific byte size — useful when testing field limits or payload budgets.

Set the Quantity

Type a number into the amount field, or click one of the quick-pick buttons — 1, 3, 5, or 10 — to set the quantity instantly without typing. The quick-picks work for all four output units.

Adjust Options

Toggle Start with Lorem ipsum on or off — on by default for the classic phrase, off for fully randomized text. Enable Live mode to regenerate automatically whenever you change a setting. Expand HTML markup output to add <p>, <strong>, <em>, heading, or list tags to the output for direct use in HTML templates.

Generate, Copy, or Download

Click Generate to produce your placeholder text. The stats bar shows word count, character count, paragraph count, and byte size. Click Copy to copy the result to your clipboard, or Download .txt to save it as a file. Click Clear to reset and start again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lorem Ipsum and why is it used?

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text derived from a scrambled passage of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC). Designers and developers use it to fill layout mockups before real content is written. Because Lorem Ipsum resembles natural language without being readable English, it lets you evaluate typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy without the reader getting distracted by the actual words. It has been the design industry's standard dummy text since the 1960s when Letraset popularized it on their dry-transfer type sheets.

What is the difference between generating by paragraphs, words, sentences, and bytes?

Paragraphs generates full blocks of text, each containing multiple sentences — ideal for testing page layouts, blog templates, or article mockups. Words generates an exact number of lorem ipsum words — useful when you need to fill a specific word budget or character count. Sentences generates individual complete sentences — good for testing short-form UI elements such as tooltips, captions, or notification messages. Bytes generates text to a specific byte size — useful for testing database field limits or network payload constraints.

What does the HTML output option do?

When HTML markup output is enabled, the generator wraps the text in the HTML tags you select. Paragraph tags wrap each block of text in a <p> element. Bold randomly wraps some words in <strong> tags. Italic randomly wraps some words in <em> tags. Headings inserts <h2> and <h3> tags between paragraphs to simulate article structure. Lists converts some paragraphs into <ul> unordered list blocks with individual <li> items. This produces ready-to-paste HTML for CMS templates, email builders, or front-end prototyping.

What does "Start with Lorem ipsum" mean?

When this toggle is on (the default), the generated text always begins with the classic phrase "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" — the standard opening that designers and developers worldwide recognize. Turn it off if you want fully randomized text that does not start with the familiar phrase. This is particularly useful when you need multiple distinct text blocks that look different from each other, such as filling several section previews on a homepage mockup.

Is my data private?

Yes. All lorem ipsum text generation happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The full word dictionary and generation logic are built into the page — no data is sent to any server and nothing leaves your device. This tool works completely offline once the page has loaded.
